This innovative solution supports up to 2 SATA HDDs/SSDs and 3 M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs, harnessing the advantages of both HDDs' vast capacity and SSDs' high-speed performance. The D5 Hybrid external HDD SSD enclosure optimizes storage by using HDDs for infrequently accessed cold data and SSDs for frequently accessed hot data. With TERRAMASTER's complimentary TPC Backupper backup software, you can easily schedule backups of hot data to HDDs, enhancing your data security. Experience the efficiency of hybrid storage with the D5 Hybrid!
Exclusive 2+3 RAID Array Mode
The D5 Hybrid raid enclosure implements TERRAMASTER's Exclusive 2+3 RAID array mode. By utilizing two SATA HDDs/SSDs in tray 1 and 2, users can configure RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD, or Single Disk, catering to diverse cold data storage requirements across various applications. Additionally, the three NVMe M.2 SSD slots exclusively support single-disk mode, making them ideal for storing frequently accessed hot data, ensuring rapid transfer speeds.
10Gbps High-Speed Bandwidth
Equipped with the USB3.2 Gen2 protocol, the D5 Hybrid NVMe enclosure delivers exceptional data transfer rates of up to 10Gbps. With M.2 NVMe SSDs, read speeds soar up to 980MB/s, while SATA SSDs achieve up to 960MB/s (tested by dedicated NAS SSD 1 TB x2, in RAID 0). Even with HDDs, the D5 Hybrid SSD enclosure maintains impressive speeds, reaching 521MB/s (tested by dedicated NAS HDD 8TB x2 in RAID 0).
Automated Backup Solution
TERRAMASTER’s complimentary TPC Backupper simplifies Windows PC backups. Users can Schedule folder or disk partition backups to TERRAMASTER USB HDD storage or NAS servers effortlessly. Just connect, install, and set up your backup task. TPC Backupper supports both incremental and differential backup strategies and is compatible with Windows 8/8.1/10/11.
Effortless Disk Replacement and M.2 SSD Installation
The D5 Hybrid hard drive enclosure simplifies the process of hard disk replacement with its tool-free tray, eliminating the need for additional tools. Featuring TERRAMASTER's Push-Lock design, it ensures secure insertion, preventing disconnection or offline issues. For M.2 SSDs, the D5 Hybrid's chassis is equipped with a convenient side sliding cover and hand-tightened screws, enabling quick SSD installation in just 5 seconds. The D5 Hybrid is also a super quiet HDD USB enclosure. Besides incorporating additional shock-absorbing measures, TERRAMASTER’s engineers have designed numerous special sound-absorbing panels in the new structure to minimize noise. Testing has shown that the new structure which the D5 Hybrid adopts achieves noise levels 50% lower than the previous generation’s, with a noise level in standby mode of only 19dB(A)!

As for speed, the cable that came with the unit is USB-C-to-USB-C only. No adapter to USB-A is included. My media server is running on 4-ish year old hardware and only has a USB-A port at 3.0 speeds. I grabbed a spare USB-C-to-USB-A cable for charging my game controllers and the speed was dismal. Using Windows 11 SDK USBView.exe, I determined the enclosure was only operating at USB 2.0 speeds. After procuring a better quality, USB 3-certified, USB-C-to-USB-A cable, the enclosure now operates at USB 3.0 speeds. I am using the enclosure in "Single" disk mode (individual disks appear in Windows) with cheap Seagate Barracuda 8TB HDDs; I'm using both drives in a Windows 11 Storage Spaces Mirror Volume (basically software RAID 1). I am getting a sustained write speeds of 120-200MB/s and read speeds are even higher. So buyer beware, if connecting to a USB-A 3.x port, you need to procure a good cable separately.
It works great as intended but there are a few negatives.
First of all I bought it specifically because it supports USB 3.2 but it only came with a USB C to C cable.
USB 10Gbps is still supported with USB A so I had to buy a separate USB 3.2 C to A cable separately. They should have included one of each for the money you are spending.
The biggest negative for me is that the Power button is located on the BACK of the unit compared to the front on the previous model. Why? So it looks sleeker?
I don't want to have it powered on all the time even in 'sleep' mode. They should have kept the power button easily accessible in the front.
The SINGLE and JBOD RAID settings are a bit confusing.
JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) will create a SINGLE volume of both disks combined.
SINGLE will have individual volumes (separate disks)
Those are my main gripes but here are the positives.
Biggest positive is that it works perfectly with both my Enterprise grade drives. A Seagate EXOS and a Western Digital Ultrastar.
The Tool-less drive slots are very easy to use and make it very easy to remove or swap.
It has big pliable rubber feet with soak up all the vibrations to minimize hard drive noise.
The fan is very quiet and provides adequate air flow, and overall the unit looks very sleek.
Overall it's a nice unit and does exactly what I needed it for despite the negatives. Hope this review was helpful!

1. Easy setup
2. Add your own drives - I repurposed some WD Reds that worked fine.
3. USC-C is nice. I'm surprised many solid brands haven't upped their designs to this common interface
But:
1. Plastic case. I suppose the price point is a factor
2. The usual "Chinglish," non-native English writing that passes for a manual
3. Known to interfere with some late model Mac sleep settings
4. Included backup software is Windows-only.
