Berkshire Patriots: Stories of Sacrifice takes readers on a thrilling journey across time, from the French and Indian War through the War in Afghanistan, to reveal how four centuries of conflict affected one close-knit region of the Berkshire Mountains. Men and women—some mere teens—valiantly served their country during its greatest times of need.

Chapters feature a Medal-of-Honor winner from the Lost Battalion; a B-17 tail gunner with thirty-five perilous missions; an enslaved militiaman; one of the famous “Code Girls”; a decorated Marine officer who survived the vicious battles of Peleliu and Okinawa and is now into his second century; and a Green Beret who fought alongside Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan. Each story is deeply personal, engaging, and inspiring.

This pilgrimage follows veterans from early childhood through the maelstrom of war and back. Each story is carefully researched using primary sources, family testimony, and original photographs and documents. Towns small and large all across America have sent their best to defend this nation—and have for centuries. We don’t know all their stories, but these stories of sacrifice that we do know will win your heart.

I grew up in the Berkshires and prized myself on the local knowledge. But this view on the selfless service of everyday heroes is both entirely informative as well as easily immersive and compelling in revealing the truth source of American Greatness. The every day heroes you live next to and have NO concept about. This is a must read.

Dennis G. Pregent has done a remarkable job researching the history of twenty-six American military personnel (heroes) who have served our nation from the French and Indian war which began in 1754 through America's war in Afghanistan. Mr. Pregent is a former United States Marine Staff Sergeant who served two tours of duty in VIetnam. He is also the author of " The Boys of St. Joes, '65 in the Vietnam War" and "Born in the Berkshires". He received his masters degree from The University of Massachusetts and became a very successful business executive. A must read for all who are interested in the military history of our Nation. Dennis has once again captured the spirit of the Berkshires through the extraordinary people who lived there. In his first book, I learned of the experiences and heroism of a very special group of young men, the St. Joe Class of 1965. Next, he told us about a number of Berkshire County residents/natives who made (and in some cases are still making) enormous contributions to the Berkshires, and beyond. And his latest endeavor provides a fascinating picture of the patriotic spirit demonstrated by Berkshire County residents since the 1700’s. As was the case in his previous books, Dennis has done a wonderful job of helping us know his subjects in a personal way. The stories told by Dennis, this time of “Berkshire Patriots”, continue to give me great pride in being able to call myself a native of the Berkshires.

This book is outstanding. If you are interested in USA history, particularly military history, this book is a must read.
The author tells the story of numerous individuals from the rural area of western Massachusetts, who demonstrated heroism, and self sacrifice. They are biographies of the lives of exceptional Patriots. Their tales span colonial times to the current war against terror.
Very few of the stories have been previously documented. Being from that area myself, I can attest to the accuracy of some of the stories. But I have been blown away by the many amazing tales that I missed. The author has done a ton of research to put this book together. I am very happy he shared it with us. Thanks Dennis.

I especially enjoyed reading the chapters of those I am familiar with. The other chapters were a great way to learn of the history and accomplishments of others from the Berkshires whose paths I had not crossed.
If you are a History buff you will enjoy learning about the strengh of those who fought for our Country. There are many conflicts addressed and each one has its own story and hero.
I promise you a good read and for many of us an education of the remarkable men and women from various Berkshire cities and towns who sacrificed so much . They most certainly were true Patriots and are deserving of the title "Hero".

You don't have to be from Massachusetts to appreciate the book Berkshire Patriots: Stories of Sacrifice. The author tells tales of various men and women tied to an area in western Massachusetts, but their stories of heroism and honor are representative of the many patriots in any town, large or small. I appreciated the way the author told stories of these people through pictures, anecdotes, letters and documents that show each of the people he covers, showing their humanity and giving us a deeper appreciation for history. Mr. Pregent has taken the life stories of these men and women and brought them to life for us, and given us as deeper understanding of what being a patriot entails.

Relish another page turner from Dennis Pregent, whose meticulous research and colorful writing make every chapter of Berkshire Patriots, Stories of Sacrifice a “you are there” moment. From the Revolutionary War to the war in Afghanistan, Dennis presents in rich detail the inspiring, sometimes harrowing, always fascinating stories of ordinary citizens from the Berkshires whose extraordinary service to our country during war is saluted by this eloquent, elegant book.
