My 2nd grade son struggles with having the will to read like many boys. It isn't his strong suit and he definitely struggles. Got him this book for Christmas & was perfect, he loves dragons, loves puppies, and his favorite color is orange! (The dragon is orange). The cute unlikely friendship is so cute and charming, he giggles and even breaks out in laughter everytime we get to certain parts of the story and he actually enjoys reading it! We take turns who reads which character and the comic style makes it feel so much less intimidating and he reads more confident and with more enthusiasm when it's this adorable story. Wish the others were available to order off Amazon too!

The How to Catch series of picture books is wonderful and young readers/listeners enjoy the traps the kids set when trying to nab leprechauns, unicorns, elves and more and now they have a new choice in graphic format and with an oversized pup and an undersized and not very ferocious dragon. Paul Gills’s illustrations are vivid and eye-catching and combined with Walstead’s dialogue the story unfolds logically and with plenty of humor that will be easily understood by the target audience of PK-grade 2. Highly recommended for library collection, especially those with high readership of the picture book series. Note: As of Jan. 2024, there are three How to Catch graphic novels-dragon, elf and unicorn.

My son grew up reading the picture book series this based off of and it puts a whole new spin on the How to Catch series. He loved it. It’s hilarious and super fun to read. The characters are soon to become legendary. Hoping to see more books in this series!

In this engaging and colorful graphic novel, Pup and Dragon are trying to catch an elf, but Santa keeps foiling their plans. This quick read is a treat for fans of the picture book series by the same author. If you have students who would rather read about catching things in a graphic novel format, this would be ideal. I would recommend this book to readers in first and second grade who are looking for the next step up from an easy reader format.

Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids, Sourcebooks Wonderland for accepting my request to read and review Pup and Dragon: How to catch an Elf.

Loved the illustrations. The color palette is festive. A cursory flip through was pretty close to what I expected. Just looking at the illustrations, I imagined ornery characters.

The story itself may resonate with kids. I had trouble staying focused. I was bored but mostly I didn't see where it was funny. While I couldn't relate to the story, perhaps you can.

I did like the "How To" draw the characters at the end of the book. I could see myself doing that part of the book with a child. And for that interactive addition, I'm rounding up to three stars.

The two sentence review from my 8 year old: REALLY FUNNY! 5 stars.

My longer version: We really enjoyed reading this graphic novel together and we both laughed out loud. He immediately asked if there were more which is always a great sign. The story was simple and fun! A great Christmas read for your graphic novel lover. The dialogue was funny in a way that matches perfectly to 5-8 year old humor. This graphic novel would be great for reluctant readers and the simplicity keeps in manageable. We will seek out the others in this series as well!
