Platinum Carbon Black has a pencil like lustre to my eyes.
This is a pigmented ink.
These inks have their own set of troubles including the need for a thorough deep clean when there is a dried ink issue. However, this ink is easy to clean (as are sailor Kiwaguro and Seiboku, I will reserve judgement for Souboku). Also Platinum gets around this with their slip seal tech which is present on most of their pens (certainly their cheapest preppy, profounte and plaisir models ). If you are worried that you will forget about the ink and it will dry out, try a preppy. If you really forget about the pen, still, 2 weeks down the line you have a pen that writes when put to paper. If it is 2 months, you have a forgetful memory. If it is two years, you have way tooo many pens.
Comparison to other black inks
1. Noodlers X-Feather. better water resistance on Platinum carbon Black, wetter and more lubricated, also a faster dry time and non-smudging off good paper. X-F is blacker, cheaper (per ml basis) and also
2. Herbin perle noire. PCB has Much better water resistance, slightly more lubricated. HPN is cheaper, slightly blacker and slightly wetter, and since it has no pretensions of water resistance, cleans off easier.
3. Schneider Black cartridges - PCB has much better water resistance, is a true black. Schneider has a purple undertone, is much cheaper, and is wetter.
Overall, if using in a EF/F pen (especially something like a preppy) - this is a solid, reliable daily pen.
This ink bottle, a Sailor Seiboku bottle and a preppy F and EF for each, and a Sailor/Pilot 14k/18k FM PGS is all one needs for a desert island situation.
For me, it greatly outperforms Noodlers X-Feather Black, which, in fact, for me, feathers on cheap paper. Life brings me lousy paper, and generally this stuff is great, much better than any of the other black inks that I have tried. If I had to complain, it’s waterproof from the get-go, so if I get some on my hands, I’m stuck with it for maybe half a day.
On better paper, I’m not so sure there is such a big difference, but in my life I generally don’t have a choice as to paper quality.
Pen cleaning: I haven’t had any problem with my F and EF pens, a converter-full lasts me about 2 weeks, I reload and give the nib a quick bath under running water, and I’m set for another two weeks.
My advice: Try it, you’ll like it.
I drew some boxes with it, set a timer for 5 minutes, then filled them in with gouache. No bleed, no streak, and I immediately filled my sketching pens with it.
Besides being able to support any watercolor or gouache work (after drying), it is a truly beautiful, deep black. It especially looks amazing out of a broader nib (looks GREAT while using Sailor Fude de Mannen), and will probably be my go-to moving forward for quite some time.
I’ve read about clogging, and I believe it, but I have had zero issues and I use it in a variety of different pens, nibs, and sizes. I do use the pens daily, however, so clogging might occur if you let them sit.
Wonderful ink.
(on a note for the ink i love that it's a quick dry and never get it on my hand while writing! reminds me of that ballpoint ink in the picture)
I compared the size to the two most common stationary. I also show this on basic printer paper for those who might not have the proper paper to see how it works on such. I recommend doing research instead into a good quality paper for fountain pens though. You can find affordable options in the communities forums on reddit etc, or youtube (the comments sections can have others finds as well). I am new but have done a lot of research to try to find my best deal for a reasonable price being a beginner unsure how I'd like the difference as many others recommend getting a cheaper option if new. I definitely have been won over and am officially going to declare a fountain pen fanatic! As I'm sure you too will once you treat yourself to this purchase.I love both of the pens I purchased so I figured I'd compare them. The two pens were both purchased on Amazon and are such, "Jinhao X159 Black Acrylic Fountain Pen # 8 Fine Nib Gold Trim for Writing and Calligraphy with Refill Ink Converter" (from the Lanxivi Store) and "PILOT Metropolitan Collection Fountain Pen, Black Barrel, Classic Design, Medium Nib, Black Ink (91107)" (from the PILOT store).I used the same ink to better review in a controlled setting. I used "Platinum Carbon Ink Bottle 60ml - Black" (Brand: PLATINUM). Be sure to get the honey browser add on because at the time of purchasing there was a great discount for a few dollars! how wonderful.Review: These pens are exactly as I had found in my research to be.The Jinhao is a bit heavier and of course, as you can see, larger. Because of this, people say those with larger hands will prefer this one and it is best used for shorter writings or signatures. The PILOT is smaller and light, perfect for longer writings and those with smaller hands (easy fix is to keep the cap on the back).Personally I have come to see their reasons in saying these things but I personally like both equally and have smaller hands. So, don't let these things deter you from just giving things a try.I got two different types of tips to see the difference. It seems both can be a bit inky but I imagine this will be a bit better once I get the proper papers to write on. Both are wonderfully smooth, glid wonderfully. I highly recommend both and you too should give different types of more inexpensive kinds a try to see what you prefer.
____The shipping for all was fast and well.
____The pictures I included are done with and without flash to best try to pick up the details.

The ink is excellent and it was delivered on time.
