I love this printer. So much that I bought a second one. But I have one little gripe .. it requires an HP account, it needs internet connectivity to get it up and running.

But if I had it to do again, I'd get the MFP M234dw .. NOT the MFP M234dwe (Note the "e")

Because I got the "e" for my second one, I was unable to get it connected to my Linux Mint laptop sharing the same network. If I'd got the dw (instead of the dwe) I think I'd have been able to access the printer as a local network device, which would have solved my problem.

Other than that, it's working perfectly.

Note, it requires HP branded toner cartridges. The cartridge has a chip that is required to make it function with the printer. Aftermarket toners won't work without the chip. It's said that the HP chip that comes with the original cartridge can be removed and put in aftermarket toners, but I'm not eager to see how well that works. HP toner isn't cheap.

I spent a half hour being frustrated for no reason, talking to tech support with bad WiFi connection, too many people talking in the background, and English somewhat difficult to understand. I'd gotten an error code when I tried to download the driver to my MacBook Pro and it said I had to call the toll free number (couldn't use live chat). Turns out I didn't need them. I logged into my old HP account and found the printer that way. Then it connected me to the Apple Store to download the app. It was a breeze from there. Tech support was supposed to call me back, never did. Had me download a screen share app that I didn't need. But the reviewer who said "the problem is you" doesn't know what they're talking about. This was not a user error issue. There's a glitch somewhere in HP's process that needs to be addressed.

Let;s go over the good stuff first. This is a terrific printer with features never described on its Amazon page — e.g. it has an Ethernet port, and a built-in scanner and copier. But the setup instructions are confusing. It told either to download an HP Setup app from the App Store — or go to an HP web address for the drivers I would need. Well, like a fool, I figured the website might have something more current, so went there. WRONG MOVE. When I went to the web address, there was nothing for me to download, and the only thing I could click on was their Chat app, which was constantly asking me how it could help. Well, I asked it where I could find the installation drivers for my machine. It gave me a case number (Uh-Oh!) and asked for my phone number. I then got a call from a Tech who installed software on my machine that let him remotely control it. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN. He fiddled around some and told me that the drivers wouldn’t;t install, that my computer had been hacked (it hadn’t — I know my Mac inside out and check it for this kind of stuff every day), and that I would have to pay between $499 and $799 for him to help me! I’m not making this up. The guy sounded like a ransomware hacker, so I hung up, uninstalled every grace of the remote software, and then checked the Mac App Store for an HP Setup app. I found it, ran it, and the printer runs like a charm. I love it! But the tech support experience was scary — not just because the guy was lying about my machine being hacked, but because of his attempt to extract nearly $800 from me so I could set up a $150 printer in my home office! So do go ahead and buy this printer, but DO NOT a under any circumstances use the chat bot or ask for human tech support. That was a nightmare!

I read several reviews here that said the setup process was difficult, with some having to call HP to get that resolved. I am using a new MacBook Air running the latest version of MacOS and was prompted to use my iPhone to expedite the setup process. I did that and it was a breeze. Connected the printer to my wifi easily, entered my password, and it was done. I did create an HP account, but did not opt for the instant ink plan. I'm pretty sure that the ink cartridge in the machine will continue to work for me until it runs out, and I print very little. Once you start the subscription plan, even using the 6 month free trial, you will never be able to use that ink cartridge if you cancel the plan. In that case you'd have to buy a new toner cartridge. So printing was fast and easy, I printed a few sample pages, and also the printer stats page using the button up top. The trouble started when I wanted to scan some documents. I previously used the HP Easy Scan App, but it looks like that is no longer supported with this printer. I found the HP Smart App to be a little less friendly, but I'm adjusting to using it. The real bottleneck came when I tried to save my scanned documents. Where do they go?!? I couldn't tell..at first. After some time of searching and reading and scratching my head, I finally realized that when you save the scans to the HP Smart App, but don't subscribe to a cloud service listed in the save menu, they go to an HP Smart folder in iCloud Drive! There is virtually no documentation for this printer, beyond setting it up, and that's simply ridiculous! In the end I was able to easily save scans, and view them on my Mac, but no amount of Google searching told me how to do this. I found it by accident. I only subtracted 1 star from my review, because everything else was quite satisfactory.

Also it does a good job with grey scale so even colored images still print well. Also has a cool feature where it will detect low ink and automatically order a new cartridge.

I was quite hesitant getting this printer due to some of the reviews of difficulty setting up, bad print quality, and so on. Well, I’m glad I took the chance! It wasn’t really difficult setting it up and the print quality is what you really expect from a laserjet. I’ve had an inkjet for more than a decade and it literally gulps the toner in the last year!!! For some, this laserjet might be difficult to setup, but try using the HP Smart on your desktop and setup is going to be easier. I even used the option to attach a network cable and it worked! Usually, for home office, toner cartridge is good for a year for light to medium printing, so I didn’t opt in for the HP+ ink. It’s an option that can be declined. This is all I need to be able to print comfortably at home without any hassle of cleaning the heads before printing, and the cartridge is not going to dry up like inkjet does.

I bought this to replace an older HP laser printer that I have 175,000 pages through and is slowly dying. I found it easy to set up, I love the printing feature for two or one sided with an easy change over. I found a feature in the scanning portion that I didn't expect, and as I am learning to use it, I can't believe the ease of saving and forwarding folders. It's new and I am just coming into my busy income tax season but I am very optimistic about it.

I have used 4 HP printers for my personal purpose during 24 years. The first one was in 1999 (US$400 HP LaserJet 4000 series - lasted 7 years) the 2nd one was HP LaserJet 1020 (US$200 and it lasted 10 years

The 3rd one (CA$100HP LaserJet Pro M118dw) has problem after 10 months - i think I printed too much, around 10000 pages in a week but I got a brand new for warranty from HP, and it was still being used in my house

And I bought the 4th one (this one - CA$200 M234dw) for my home office because i usually use the scan function.

Except the price of cartridge are too high but HP LaserJet products are all perfect. Never worries about the quality. We can easily buy alternative cartridge (half of original price) or refill the ink ourselves (10% of original HP's price) with a little bit of printing quality reduce but it's acceptable.
