On a *purely* technical level, this is a legitimately well-built and thoughtfully engineered device, and the printer is more than happy to work without an internet connection whatsoever, using all of the same protocols that have been standard for well over a decade now. Unfortunately, it renders itself a brick after about 15 pages unless you let HP (or any malicious actor with sufficient access to HP's servers) exfiltrate whatever data they want from it. I believe you might be able to circumvent this by doing a factory reset every time, but let's not kid ourselves. Nobody is going to do this. Because these protocols have been standardized for so long, any printer outside of specialty cases does not require an app to function in the modern day. There might be a couple more features, but it's *entirely optional*. You do not *need* the app. They need *you* on the app. If it weren't for this, I would be extremely happy and praising this device for being an excellent product to anyone who cared to listen to me ramble about a printer, but now we're here at the opposite end of the spectrum.Don't be misled, the 'e' (short for 'e-waste') in the model number and the 'HP+' (short for 'hateful printer plus!') branding means that this is an insidiously invasive piece of future garbage that will end up polluting landfills in a few years (if you're *lucky*, exactly two years after the last one rolls off the assembly line and the model gets discontinued, which will probably be soon judging by the price drops) when they inevitably decide to stop supporting it to get you to buy the next one. This is an absolutely disgusting anti-consumer practice and should not be rewarded with your hard-earned money. They subsidize this model with your data, the 'standard' printer that doesn't come with 'premium features' (mostly selling your data and having so much planned obsolescence it'd make Bernard London blush) costs about twice as much at the time of writing. It's safe to say that it'll be the frequency of printing, your location (including GPS data, instead of just IP-based and wireless SSID-based geolocation techniques. Why does it have GPS? Not any reason that's bound to be a good one for you, that's for sure. It's visible right there in the web portal, which is quite fun to discover.), if you use their ink subscription service, how often you replace the cartridge, what types of paper you commonly use, how much you use the scanner, if you primarily use the ADF or the flatbed section of the scanner, how many pages you print at a time, how many devices are on your local network, the MAC addresses of those devices (to sell for better correlation of households and habits), what type of devices they are, and so on and so forth. It's simply not enough for you to give them your hard-earned cash for the product *and* the consumables for the product, (since this is a 'plus' printer instead of a 'standard' printer, it doesn't allow for third-party cartridges, so it will either come from HP or nowhere at all) *you* have to become their product too. This all comes together form a *comically* anti-consumer device on the whole and this practice *should not* be rewarded in any way, shape, or form. It should be derided for the disgusting and ethically bankrupt thing it is.*Please* don't waste your time and money. You deserve much better than this.

This review covers the original installation and test usage of all functions. I will update if any problems show up in the future. I have never had a printer that set up as smoothly and quickly as this one. How easy was it?..... The box arrived at 11:00 am and by 1:00 pm the printer was unpacked, physically set up, and connected to the wireless network, 2 PCs, 1 Chromebook, 1 iPad, and 2 iPhones. In addition, all of the functions were tested using each of the connected devices where applicable. All you really need to do is to download the HP software as indicated in the setup guide and follow the instructions to the letter. If printing doesn't work, check your list of printers in "devices and printers" . You may find 2 new drivers installed: HP Smart Printing, and another with the name of your printer "HP LaserJet MFP...." Just check the one that isn't checked and that should work. Be sure to set the one that works as the default printer.
This step added less than a minute to the installation process. So far, I am extremely happy with this purchase. Fingers crossed!

I purchased this device a year ago, with Instant Ink. A few weeks ago, I cancelled Instant Ink and installed an HP toner. This morning, the printer stopped working. The error message said the drivers were bad, so I contacted Tech Support. They said they needed to take control of my laptop in order to determine the problem. I was uncomfortable doing this, but agreed when they said it was the only option. Before I knew what was happening, they told me I had a virus and needed to install a certain program to fix it. Then they billed me $249.95 for the service: twice the price I paid for the device in the first place.

After considering what had happened, I called the virus protection company, Sharepoint, to cancel the subscription and a very unpleasant representative told me the only way I could get a refund was to let them back into my device so they could destroy what they had done. Since there's no way I'm ever letting anyone take control of my laptop again, I'm out $250.

I blame HP for this. First, it's highly suspicious that a problem like this would pop up so soon after I cancelled the Instant Ink subscription. Then, because I was led to believe my only option was to let this one company into my computer to make the fix. I could have installed antivirus software on my own for a fraction of the price they charged me.

I will never purchase an HP product again, and encourage anyone who is thinking about doing business with them to reconsider.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great laser printer

Have been very impressed with this printer so far. Have had inkjet HP printers before but have wanted a laser printer. Costs less per page and no need to worry about ink drying up. Prints quick, clean and clear. No issues with WiFi set up or mobile printing.

HP ink program seems gimmicky and you don’t actually get 6months free without a subscription fee. If you need more toner better to buy that yourself. Unless it’s for a business then it’s a good plan.

When you can get it to connect, which is in frequently, it will lose connection in the middle of a job, and when it doesn’t do that, the paper will jam every few pages. Brand new printer. Constant paper jams. The kind that dent the edges of the page. Print quality is passable, but certainly nothing special. And again, that is only when you can get it to print, which is never guaranteed. Absolutely useless for any multi page print jobs as it cannot get through five sheets without jamming or losing connection. We have tried from multiple devices, multiple OS systems, And the problem is consistent throughout. Possibly a defective unit, too late for me to return it. I would not advise anybody to buy this at any price. A dollar store printer would outperform this pile of crap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great printer and well designed with one exception
Reviewed in Canada on May 4, 2023
This is a great light to medium duty printer that is well designed with one exception, the paper tray cover. I have been purchasing/using HP printers since the 90's and I have also been tearing my hair out since the 80's dealing with printer jams, driver issues and other fine printer nuisances.

Before my true career took off, I was actually employed by a local company and trained to repair printers. I did this for 1 year and I can tell you that I experienced and have seen plenty out there in this industry, from small inkjet printers to the larger network printers. And I will always say that HP is still the top dog with Lexmark nipping at its heels. Those are the only brand names that I will deal with or buy.

As for this printer, I was somewhat concerned about the cover for the paper tray. I could see that not only was it a cover but also had electronics integrated in it as well. For all intents and purposes, it works and it works well but I find it a bit flimsy for my liking. After using this printer for a month, I can say that this does not really concern me anymore. I would like to have seen more capacity with the paper tray (it is not really a tray because you lift up the cover and slide the new paper in as opposed to the cassette style that you pull out, fill with paper and push back in. Apart from that, this is a well thought out design by HP for those who need a laser printer but don't require a lot of printing. And I can't complain about the price either (I remember buying dot matrix printers for a tidy sum back in the 80's).

3.0 out of 5 stars Printer works fine, toner arrived at less than 10% left
Reviewed in Canada on April 17, 2024
    Pros:
Prints well in black and white, no network problems as of yet when using a cat 6 cable.
Small profile so it can be placed almost anywhere

    Cons:
Printer is almost out of ink after printing the first page. I'm going to guess this has been repackaged a bunch or it's been sitting around long enough the ink has completely dried out.
The control panel design is a bit clunky.
Print tray is kind of bolted on at the bottom of the printer, rather than having an actual tray. It's an odd design choice.
Extra money cost of ordering a toner cartridge will be adding to the overall cost of the printer. If I'd known this ahead of time I would have bought a different model from a different supplier since the toner cost would be the difference between this one and a more robust model.
