“A refreshing and enlightening new perspective on what it means to be powerful.”—Susan Cain, bestselling author of Quiet

We all know what it looks like to use power badly. But how much do we really know about how to use power well?

There is so much we get wrong about power: who has it, what it looks like, and the role it plays in our lives. Grounded in over two decades’ worth of scientific research and inspired by the popular class of the same name at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business,
Acting with Power offers a new and eye-opening paradigm that overturns everything we thought we knew about the nature of power.

Although we all feel powerless sometimes, we have more power than we tend to believe. Power exists in every relationship, not just at the top of big institutions. It isn’t merely a function of status or hierarchy, either. It’s about how much we are needed and how well we take care of other people.

We often assume that power flows to those with the loudest voice or the most commanding presence. But, in fact, true power is often much quieter and more deferential than we realize. Moreover, it’s not just how much power we have but how we use it that determines how powerful we actually are.

Actors aren’t the only ones who play roles for a living. We all make choices about how to use the power that comes with our given circumstances. We aren’t always cast in the roles we desire—or the ones we feel prepared to play. Some of us struggle to step up and be taken more seriously, while others have trouble standing back and ceding the spotlight.

In
Acting with Power, Deborah Gruenfeld shows how we can get more comfortable with power by adopting an actor’s mindset. Because power isn’t a personal attribute. It’s a part we play in someone else’s story.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“A smart, interesting, and timely book about how to use power in everyday life—and, just as important, how not to.”—Daniel Gilbert, Harvard psychologist and author of Stumbling on Happiness

“‘All the world’s a stage . . . and one man in his time plays many parts.’
Acting with Power stirs us to give our best performance as players on the corporate stage. It shows how the power we do possess can be used well, humanely, for the advancement of something more than our personal success. Deborah Gruenfeld’s book directs us in the art of acquiring power by using our abilities while being our authentic selves. This book is a treasure.”—Tristan Walker, founder and CEO of Walker & Company Brands

Acting with Power is an entertaining and uplifting read, filled with sharp insight and practical advice. This book will change how you think about power and how you handle it—and will help you see the power you may not have known you have.”—Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and founder of LeanIn.Org and OptionB.Org

“Gruenfeld’s perspective on power had a big impact on us at eBay. In her new book, she offers fresh insights on the important topic of how we deal with our own power and powerlessness.
Acting with Power cuts through the clichés and shows us how power can work.”—John Donahoe, CEO of Nike

“We tend to think of power as something that looks and works more or less the same in anyone who wields it. But as Deborah Gruenfeld explains in this insightful and eye-opening book, there is no one ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to act with power. We can all learn how to adapt our performance based on the setting, the relationship dynamics, and the emotions we bring onstage with us. This brilliant book shows us how.”
—Susan David, psychologist, Harvard Medical School, and bestselling author of Emotional Agility

This book is amazing. I have been reading a ton in this area (leadership, communication) and this masterpiece takes the cake. It answers so many questions that I had been wondering about, regarding the harmonious functioning of groups and how to contribute effectively. Deborah uses techniques from acting to show us how to be present in the role that we have, and stay agile, learning to play power up or down depending on what the moment requires. As with any skill set, we can make the most of it by assessing how we tend to act when we are uncentered, and consciously working to develop the opposite skill set. It's about paying attention and doing the next right thing.

What I disliked the most is that the book is boring. It took me forever to finish. I finish a 250-page graduate book in mathematics in 2 days and took weeks to finish this book.

On the other hand, it is a very important book to read. Forget about "be yourself". That's silly advice. The way to go is to act your part. This book is a nice start.

On the other hand, I remember nothing from it. Must pass through the most important points.

I’ve read several books on power, and they tend to talk about power as something to be seized, and used for personal gain and advancement. But this book seemed to discuss power in a more mature and grounded away. I’ve gained more insight on how to mature into the leadership roles I find myself in, and to clearly see when there are power plays just by reading this book. Excellent!

Gruenfeld’s book reexamines our preconceptions about power: what it means to have and to use it. She frames power as “how much you are needed” and as the “part you play in someone else’s story.” This is a powerful and empowering message. More relevant and necessary than ever before.

It's a must read. Well researched, amazingly written, useful, and inspiring!

Very shallow , poorly sourced or referenced so called investigative text that is mostly about the author’s powerless experience and her thoughts on how to compensate. Gender biased and full of nowadays female prejudice and hopes of leveling the playing field by crying faul play at whatever they think is the product of a male dominated society. Not worth my time or anyone seeking serious research.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for all those who want to learn how to use power well
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2020
This is a great read for someone who - like me - has been uneasy about power. I grew up in communist Poland where our leaders used power to advance their own interests so power was nothing I aspired to have or use. For me, it was a tool those higher up used to coerce others to do what they wanted. After the system changed and I started my career, my attitude changed. But only a little. This book made me look at power from a totally different perspective. It explains how to get comfortable with the power we have and use it responsibly for the benefit of others. Excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on the subject of (executive) presence
Reviewed in Japan on June 21, 2020
I really liked this book, as it is both profound with insight, yet practical, and a very pleasant read with a personal, human voice thanks to Prof. Gruenfeld's routine teaching this content on (Executive) Presence for years at Stanford University.

For anyone interested to build more presence at work, e.g. when pitching a new idea or resolving conflict, this is the book to read. Some learnings will not be entirely new, but there has not been such a well-curated book on the subject.

This book is not to standard of modern days management, the content is too complex and a confusing flow of the topics, the more you read the more you are confused. No interest or curiosity was gained over the pages, I literally dropped after two chapter, author use highly mechanistic approach in writing……
