Some other criteria:
Reliability:
I can't speak to long term reliability, or post warranty reliability, as I've only had the Jura for about a month, but so far I've experienced no major problems. Several people have complained about the "empty container light" coming on when the container does not need to be emptied. I have experienced this a few times, and have developed and discarded several theories as to the cause. I can only surmise that a sensor someplace in the container tray mechanism is being fooled. I haven't found where the sensor is located and the light comes on infrequently enough that I'm not concerned about it. Whenever the light comes on I clean all the disposal container parts and that seems to solve the problem in both the cases where the container was filled to overflowing and the case where the light came on in error. In the month I've been using the Jura on a daily basis I've only received a false container full light about five times.
Ease of use:
Fill the bean receptacle, fill the water receptacle, empty the used coffee tray when full, select the strength, select amount of coffee, wait for your cup to fill, drink coffee. Every few weeks run it through the cleaning cycle. That's it. Easier than going to the coffee shop. Some people have asked how it compares in convenience to the Nespresso coffee makers. I don't own a Nespresso maker but my in-laws have one in their vacation home and I've used theirs many times. In my opinion once you've used it few times the Jura is easier to use and it makes better coffee. I like to start my mornings with a double Americano. With the Nespresso I insert a capsule, select the size of the coffee, wait, insert a second capsule (feel a bit guilty about this second capsule since I know each one is about 75 cents) and wait and enjoy coffee. With the Jura I select the strength and size of the cup I want, wait, select the size of the cup again, wait, enjoy coffee. The only advantage I can see to the Nespresso is that the capsules make it easy to switch between different coffee's and between regular and decaf coffee, since with the Jura it's a pain to switch out beans once their in the grinder. Of course with the Nespresso you're limited to the coffee's available in capsules, with the Jura the selection is limitless. Also trying out different coffees immediately is supported by the chute (see below).
The chute:
The Jura provides a chute for a single cup of coffee. It can be used if, for example, a member of your family prefers decaf and the grinder is full of regular beans. I like the occasional cup of decaf in the evening. I find the instructions for the grind to use in the chute a little ambiguous. "Use ground coffee which is not ground too finely." Is a basic espresso grind too fine? A fine drip grind too fine? I have a fairly high end grinder, so I can set it to pretty much any grind. After playing around a little bit, I decide the finest drip grind seems to work the best. I noticed that when I set the grind to espresso, a single shot setting produces more ground coffee than the included spoon can hold, but when I set the grinder to drip grind, a single cup of coffee setting doesn't produce enough ground coffee to fill the included spoon. So far I have not been able to produce a cup of decaf using the chute that tastes as good as any cup I've produced using the Jura's internal grinder. Maybe I just haven't found the right bean yet. Also I've noticed that when I use the chute, even though I never add more than a level measuring spoon, I frequently find dried coffee grounds spilled onto the used coffee tray.
Cleaning:
The Jura cleans itself whenever it's turned on and also when it's turned off. During the cleaning process it excretes water through the coffee spout as well as internally into the cleaning tray, so one finds oneself filling the water reservoir more frequently than anticipated. The cleaning cycle light comes on about every two weeks. Then one is expected to drop a cleaning tablet into the cleaning chute and a series of prompts will guide you through a relatively painless 15 minute cleaning cycle. Initially the Jura comes with a CLEARYL filter to eliminate scale buildup. After 2000 oz of water have flown through the filter the filter (about $23 through Amazon) needs to be replace. The instructions also say the filter stops working after 2 months, although the instructions on the filter package say 3 months. If you prefer not to spend $23 every two or three months on a filter, you can buy some descaling powder or pills. The instructions say that a strip has been included to test the hardness of your water and a descaling timer can be set with this information. I didn't receive a strip with my Jura. I was told a strip would be sent to me, but it's been almost a month and I haven't received it yet. At any rate I'm currently using the filters so it's not an issue for me.
In conclusion, I'm very happy with the Jura so far. I wish the decaf I make using the chute tasted a little better, but there's a limited supply of decaf beans where I shop, so I'm hoping once I locate some better decaf beans the taste will improve. As for the coffee ground in the Jura, I've tried several different types of beans and they all taste great.
The coffee taste is excellent with lots of creama. The unit has 3 presets for how much water you want to run through for each cup - Ristretto, Expresso, Coffee. I elected to re-program the coffee setting to pump out about 6 ozs. I use a strong Italian roast and that amount of water resulted with the perfect cup. You'll have to do some experimenting before you get the unit "dialed in".
Another thing the ENA does better than my previous Saeco is the water is hotter. I no longer have to put each cup of coffee in the microwave to heat it up. I recommend using a double walled glass. They do an excellent job of insulating and you get to see the beautiful creama floating on the top. It's almost like looking at a pint of Guinness.
This is the first super automatic I have had that had the alternate port for using ground coffee in lieu of the normal beans. This is very handy if you want to brew a cup of de-caf.
About the only thing I would like changed is to make the water reservoir a little bigger. Being that I increased the amount of water for a normal cup I can just get 2 cups per fill.
**UPDATE**
I've had this coffee maker now for over 3 years and it is still working flawlessly. Typically it makes about 3-4 cups every single day and still works and looks like it did when it was brand new. I run the cleaning cycles and change the filter when it prompts for it. Can't recommend it highly enough.
** Update #2 **
I've now had this coffee maker for almost 6 years - it's still going strong. Not a single issue or problem. My rough estimate is that it's made about 6,500 cups of coffee! Amazing.
** Update #3 **
After 7 1/2 years my Jura Ena finally stopped working. By my estimation it made about 8,300 cups. That's 8,300 cups where all I did was follow the Jura's prompts as to when to clean & replace the filter. It ran pretty much trouble free all those years. Of course I would always keep the trays and water reservoir clean.
A few months before it died I did have periodic issues where it would forget the setting I had programmed for the amount of water to use. It would reset itself and pump out the maximum amount of water and I would have to reprogram it. This would happen every few weeks. I submitted a support request about this through Jura's website. I never heard back. This lack of support seems to jive with other people's experience. Something to consider.
But, when faced with a dying Jura Ena, I still didn't hesitate to buy another. The photo I attached is the old model on the left and the new one on the right. This is still the best coffee maker out there in my opinion.
